Why Supervision Matters in Strength Training

What role does supervision play in the results we get from strength training? In this episode of the Discover Strength Podcast, Luke Carlson examines two studies—one involving older adults with type 2 diabetes and sarcopenia, and another involving experienced resistance-trained adults—to explore what happens when supervised training becomes unsupervised.

The research reveals that supervision can improve adherence, exercise intensity, technique, progression, strength, muscle growth, and functional performance. Luke also discusses why supervision is an often-overlooked variable in strength-training research and why, across nearly every field, even highly motivated and experienced people benefit from having a coach.

Ultimately, the evidence points to a simple conclusion: we all need a coach.
