Make Your Day Better

I recently read the book, Running with Purpose, written by Jim Weber (a fellow Minnesotan), CEO of the running shoe brand Brooks.  The book is a fascinating deep dive into Brooks’ strategy for competing successfully with the Goliaths of the running shoe industry.  It’s an awesome business book.

One concept really stood out to me and was reinforced earlier this week.

Weber built the Brooks brand around the notion that going on a run makes our day better.  As an avid runner, I agree.

Harvard Professor and best-selling author Arthur Brooks (this is getting confusing… too many “Brooks”!) echoes this sentiment but applies it to strength training.

On a podcast with Tim Ferriss, he states, and I paraphrase, “Your workout doesn’t make you happier, but the research is clear: your workout and your physical fitness decrease your levels of unhappiness.  Your workout wards off unhappiness.”

This might be the most powerful aspect of our workout (strength training or a run).  Whatever kind of day we’re having, the day gets at least a little bit better after a workout.

Final note: My favorite day to work each year is Thanksgiving morning.  Every rep of every set I’m coaching, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to serve our clients and do the work we do.  All of our locations are open for a few hours on Thanksgiving morning, and we’d love to make your Thanksgiving day just a little bit better by starting with an awesome workout.
