There is No Such Thing as Functional Training
The textbook example of functional training is someone using a weighted bat hoping to increase their bat speed. The truth is that tadding weight to your bat detrimental for your bat speed. Research has shown the bat speed actually got slower in these instances. The reality, is if you want to improve your bat speed, it is important to strengthen the raw material; the muscles used to swing a bat. This should then be followed up by practicing your given sport.
Take home message: A lot of functional training that you see today actually leads to a negative transfer of skill.
